A very moving ceremony in Nere this morning. A significant part of the event is the reading of the names of the villagers lost in wars. The longest list by far was that of the locals killed in the First World War. We are still shocked by the number of brothers that died. Also mentioned were the families that were transported and, presumably, died in concentration camps. Afterwards, the Mayor hosted drinks in the Mairie. It was nice to see numbers swelled by local ex-pat British wearing both the poppy and the French symbol, the cornflower.
Une cérémonie très émouvante à Nere ce matin. Une partie importante de l'événement est la lecture des noms des villageois perdus dans les guerres. La liste la plus longue est de loin celle des habitants tués pendant la Première Guerre mondiale. Nous sommes toujours choqués par le nombre de frères décédés. Les familles qui ont été transportées et probablement mortes dans des camps de concentration ont également été mentionnées. Par la suite, le maire a organisé des boissons dans la mairie. C'était agréable de voir des chiffres gonflés par des expatriés britanniques locaux portant à la fois le pavot et le symbole français, le bleuet.
